Why you need your model number

The model number (sometimes called the model identifier or A-number) tells you the exact generation of your device. It matters because:

  • Ordering parts — screens, batteries and keyboards differ between generations. An A1466 battery will not fit an A1932, even if both say "MacBook Air".
  • Getting an accurate repair quote — a screen replacement price depends on the exact panel in your model.
  • Checking compatibility — cases, chargers, docks and macOS/iOS versions are tied to specific models.
  • Checking warranty & trade-in value — Apple identifies your device by its serial number and model.

Important: model number vs serial number

The model number (A1xxx) identifies the device type — e.g. "MacBook Air (M1, 2020)". The serial number (10–12 characters) is unique to your individual device. For repairs, quote both: the model number gives us the parts, the serial number confirms the exact configuration and warranty history.

MacBook, MacBook Air & MacBook Pro

Fastest way — from the screen:

  1. Click the Apple menu (the Apple logo at the top-left corner of your screen).
  2. Choose About This Mac.
  3. The window shows the model name and year (e.g. "MacBook Pro (14-inch, 2021)") and the chip.
  4. Click More Info… (macOS Ventura and later: System Settings → General → About) to see the serial number.

Physically — on the bottom case: flip your MacBook over. In tiny print near the hinge and regulatory markings you will find two lines: "Model A1xxx" and "Serial …". If the engraving has worn off, check the original box, your purchase invoice, or the About This Mac screen.

One A-number can cover several years

A single model number such as A1466 was used for MacBook Air models from 2012 to 2017 — with very different internals across those years. If the exact year matters (for parts or macOS support), use the serial number with Apple's Check Coverage page as described below.

iMac, Mac mini & Mac Studio

On most iMac models the model number is printed on the underside of the stand's foot.

iMac: the model number and serial number are printed on the underside of the stand's foot. Tilt the iMac or lay it on its back to read them. On iMac Pro, they are printed on the back of the enclosure near the bottom. You can also click Apple menu → About This Mac for the model name, then System Settings → General → About for the serial number.

Mac mini: turn the unit over — the model number (e.g. A2816 for the M2 Mac mini) and serial are on the underside label.

Mac Studio: the model number and serial are on the underside of the unit.

Original box or invoice: every Mac ships with a label on the box listing the model and serial number — a handy backup if the device text has worn off.

iPhone, iPad & iPod touch

From the screen (recommended):

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap About.
  4. Next to Model Number, you will see a part number starting with M (e.g. MPXN3ZA/A). Tap it — it flips to show the model number starting with A (e.g. A2487 for iPhone 13).

On the device itself:

  • iPhone 7 and earlier, many iPads, iPod touch: model number printed on the back of the device.
  • iPhone 8 to iPhone 14 (with SIM tray): remove the SIM tray and look into the slot — the model number is printed on the upper side, in bright light.
  • iPhone 14/15 (US) and newer without a SIM tray: look inside the USB-C or Lightning connector — the model number is on the upper side of the connector.

Apple Watch

  1. On your iPhone, open the Watch app.
  2. Tap the My Watch tab.
  3. Tap General → About.
  4. Find Model — it shows a part number starting with M. Tap it and it changes to the 5-character model number starting with A (e.g. A2775).

You can also read the model number engraved on the underside of the watch case (you may need a magnifying glass and good light).

AirPods, AirPods Pro & AirPods Max

  • From your iPhone/iPad: open Settings → Bluetooth, tap the "i" icon next to your AirPods, and read the Model Number (e.g. A2698 for AirPods Pro (2nd generation)).
  • On the AirPods themselves: the model number is printed on the underside of each AirPod, starting with A.
  • AirPods Max: remove the left ear cushion — the model number is printed behind it.

Using the serial number to identify your device

The most reliable way to identify an Apple device is the serial number:

  1. Find the serial number using the steps above (About This Mac / Settings → General → About).
  2. Go to checkcoverage.apple.com on any device.
  3. Enter the serial number — Apple shows the exact model name and year plus warranty status.
